The Making of a Knight by Angharad Thompson Rees is a unique fantasy adventure brought to life through verse. Shadow-Snatchers have brought fear to the kingdom and the king will not provide the villagers with safety among his walls. The role of hero falls to young Caramath who sets out to save his people by embarking on an adventure that brings him face to face with many dangers. Along the way, he confronts a ferryman, befriends a dragon, and battles sirens with each encounter bringing him one step closer to fulfilling his destiny.
The structure is unique as Rees doesn’t use typical prose but instead uses poetic verse to tell the story of Caramath’s journey to becoming a hero. The rhyme scheme provides a lyrical quality to the storytelling of Caramath’s various adventures and gives a tone of lightness that will appeal to all ages. The verse style makes it a quick read while making it feel like a fairytale with an elegant sound and a magical quality to the story.
Rees weaves in various challenges for Caramath to face that help him to discover his courage, kindness, and bravery, which make him worthy of becoming a knight. The other characters are important to the various lessons he learns along the way. Rees places a sweet twist on the idea of a dragon through Traveller by veering away from the typical ferocious incarnation to an innocent friend that’s still just a child. The Making of a Knight is full of heart and adventure as a hero’s journey to find his courage through kindness and brave actions is brought to life through stunning verse.
