What if you could change into a fly on the wall and experience something about your family’s past? In this case, the main character, a nine-year-old girl whose name is Grizelda Day, who lives in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, always wondered how she got her unusual name. Grizelda is the narrator of the story. Her friends, Alisha and Sam, spend time together after school at Alisha and Sam’s house. Sam is a year older and mischievous. He is the catalyst to the adventure the three of them are about to embark upon. He explains to the two girls how he purchased three cubes that each contain a fly inside. He tells them that if they lick the cube they will be transformed into the insect and go back to someone’s past, based on their thoughts or emotions at the time. Grizelda is skeptical at first but she wants to find out why her mother named her. We find out why.
Timeflies: The Maiden Voyage by M.C. Goldrick is a fun and informative read for young readers and adults as well. With wit and imagination, author Goldrick steers the young reader’s imagination. I especially liked the way Goldrick includes facts about flies, their life cycle and how they ingest food, etc. The storytelling and dialogue are well written and the discovery of why Grizelda was so named was worth the wait. Timeflies: The Maiden Voyage is the first in a projected series of books for young readers. If future books are as good as this one, Timeflies will prove to be a successful series.
