The Magical Love Box by Mary Reinhart is a story of giving and receiving, a story of love and magic. Jack gets a small package from his grandma on his birthday. It is his birthday present and Jack is very excited. Jack likes getting presents and he wonders what is inside it. After everyone finishes having dinner, Jack opens his present with the help of his little brother, James. It is a colorful wooden box painted by the native people of El Salvador. He realizes that the hinged lid will let him open and close the box. Jack calls his grandma and they discuss the things that can go into the box. Grandma decides to visit Jack so that they can talk about what to put into the box when they are together. Will they be able to figure out what to put into the box?
The concept is magical and wonderful and the story is not only about the bonding between grandparents and children but also about unconditional love, giving and receiving. The idea of the magical love box is enchanting and whimsical and illustrator Shawn McCann makes the magic of the story vivid through his beautiful and bright illustrations. 'Let's Talk About the Book' activity at the end of the book is good to reflect on the magical moments in life and will be interesting to use in classrooms and at home to see how children respond. The story is magical and this holiday season I am motivated to create my own magical love box and put the things that are always dear to me inside it. I think it will be a good idea for young readers out there to have their own magical love boxes and feel the power of love always.
