Lucy is a detective and a good one, too. She worked hard to get where she is and she continues to work hard. She has good instincts that serve her well as she struggles to unravel the mystery behind the murder of a young girl. The case seems to wrap up too quickly and too neatly, and there’s something about the simplicity of its resolution that haunts Lucy. It’s not until two years after the case is closed that Lucy catches a break in the case, one that will reopen the tragedy of a young girl’s untimely demise. In the meantime, Lucy and her partner, James, are romantically involved. But there’s a complication to this relationship: James is already married and has children. Life is never as simple as it should be, either in romantic attraction or in solving murders.
J.K. Wood’s mystery story, The Lucy Chronicles, Volume One: Before Dawn, is an intense drama that unfolds very carefully. The main plot, the murder, is coupled with a subplot that shows the more human side of Homicide’s Detective Lucy Hart and her partner, Detective James Johnson, as the two struggle with the desire to be a couple and not just partners on the job. This is the first of a series of Lucy mysteries and the plots and subplots are sure to continue to unravel in future volumes. The Lucy Chronicles is a mystery, but it is also a journey, a story about discoveries, both in cases of murder and in the life of a detective who tries to solve the murder. Lots of complex twists and turns make this story a great page-turner mystery.
