The Lost Burro/El Burrito Perdido by Mary Esparza-Vela is a delightful bilingual storybook for children. Raulito lives with his parents on top of a mountain in Mexico. The family has to travel down the mountainside every day for water. It was a difficult task for them to make sure there was enough water for drinking and bathing. One day Raulito comes across a burro munching the leaves in his mother's garden and he wants to keep him. His father agrees to keep the burro until the owner turns up and they name him Pepito. As time passes, Pepito becomes an important member of the family. He did all the chores for them and he also did the chore of bringing up water for them. Raulito and his parents were relieved. One day when Raulito goes to feed Pepito, he finds the burro missing. Raulito's father thinks he has been stolen. Will they be able to find Pepito?
The story will put a smile on the faces of all young readers who will love Pepito and Raulito. The illustrations are bright and lively and breathe life into the scenes and characters. They also give a good pace and movement to the story. It is a good bedtime storybook, and parents and grandparents can read it out to their kids and grandkids. The book can also used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. The author has written a simple story with some beautiful and memorable characters, and scenes that will fascinate young readers.
