The Lopsided Christmas Cake by Wanda E. and Jean Brunstetter is centered on Amish girls Elma and Thelma, twin sisters, who have just inherited their grandparents' home and country store. The girls leave behind their mother and father’s home and learn to live on their own. Elma is the practical, neat and level headed twin, while Thelma is more the 'one day at a time,' fly by the seat of her pants type. Joseph, a shy bachelor, and his not so shy best friend Delbert are the love interests. Thelma and Elma don’t expect to find romance, but when Joseph finds himself attracted to Thelma, he bids on her lopsided cake in hopes of talking with her and getting to know her better. Delbert is therefore obliged to pair off with Elma. The foursome have several dates and soon love blossoms, but only for one of the couples. We, the readers, share in the good and bad times of the twins as they try to repair grandma and grandpa’s house, deal with a stubborn horse and an uncooperative wooden stove, re-open the country store, and survive in the new town.
The Lopsided Christmas Cake by Wanda E. and Jean Brunstetter is a delightful Christian fiction story. It's a well written, quick and easy story to read and enjoy. Wanda and Jean Brunstetter have shared their knowledge of the Amish way of life in a loving manner with four main characters that were impossible to not like. I highly recommend The Lopsided Christmas Cake as a great summer beach read. However, be sure to not be misled by the Christmas in the title as you will enjoy this book any time of the year.
