When recently retired homicide investigator Tom Faust discovers a body hanging from the rafters of his work-in-progress renovation of an old church, little does he know that the chain of events will lead him back to a cold case from seventeen years earlier and a private security firm that has more skeletons in its closet than solved cases. As people continue to meet a sad and untimely demise and the threats intensify, the tension thickens and Tom must make difficult decisions to unravel a case that is making less sense and raising more questions as the days progress.
Michael J. McCann’s crime novel, The Long Road into Darkness, is a compelling tale of murder, espionage and so much more, all set in Canada, just northeast of Toronto. Michael J. McCann brings substantial knowledge of crime and investigative proceedings which gives considerable merit and credibility to a plausible plot. This is Tom Faust’s story as he revisits a cold case that has haunted him for years. As the plot intensifies, the evidence becomes more complex as it obviously points to some connection to Faust and his former work with the Ontario Provincial Police. The background on Canadian crime investigations and legal matters is well presented, in just enough detail to interest the reader without providing too much dry material. The characters are well developed and the story unfolds with a good balance of narrative and dialogue. With the pizazz and intensity of a John Grisham novel, the reader is spellbound from start to finish. The Long Road into Darkness is a real page-turner of a thriller.
