The Lonesome Shepherd is a psychological drama novel written by John F. Bronzo. In the year 2012, Thomas Shields prepares to scatter his father's ashes by the coast of Florida. While waiting, he begins to relate his father Bob's life story to his taxi driver. Bob was supposed to be on a captured German submarine that sank in 1943, taking the lives of ten of his fellow comrades. Plagued by guilt and remorse, he vows to take care of the families and loved ones of his fellow soldiers over the next few decades, becoming the Shepherd in their lives. Meanwhile, in the future, his son Thomas chances upon an opportunity to change the past and save his father's friends. But what will it mean for Thomas and his family?
The Lonesome Shepherd is about choices and second chances. Author John F. Bronzo weaves an intricate plot filled with numerous twists and turns to showcase that the only way to honor the memories of our deceased loved ones is to live a life of virtue, purpose, and meaning ourselves. The story takes quite a drastic turn by the midway point and picks up the pace significantly. The characters are grounded and layered and that makes them easy to relate to. Thomas, especially, felt like a complex character with varied motivations for his actions. I also found myself highly intrigued by the theoretical concepts that are touched upon in the narrative. If you're itching for a psychological drama that makes you think, The Lonesome Shepherd is the book for you.
