The Lone Dragon Knight by D.C. Clemens is the first novel in The Dragon Knight series. A fantasy, the plot centers around Mercer, a young man with an unknown past. He’s sold to a member of the crime guild to be used for nefarious deeds. However, Mercer, who is suffering from a corruption curse, manages to escape, finding himself in a ruined city. It is there he discovers Aranath, the spirit of a dragon concealed in an ancient sword. With Aranath honing Mercer’s skills, he sets off on a journey to discover where he really came from, and how the corruption curse was laid upon him.
Although I am not usually a fan of fantasy novels, The Lone Dragon Knight by D.C. Clemens kept my attention from beginning to end. Clemens writes plainly, not bothering to fluff up the descriptions of battles and events with needless words. I felt like I didn’t have to be a hardcore fantasy fan to enjoy the story of Mercer. The dragon spirit encapsulated in the sword was very clever, as were the side adventures Mercer experiences. All the events had a purpose, and that’s something I truly appreciated. As is often the case with first novels in a series, Clemens uses The Lone Dragon Knight to build alliances for his main character, and to establish his personality and purpose. I liked Mercer a lot, and felt the author did not bombard the reader with too much information at once. A concise, clear, and enjoyable novel. I look forward to reading the next installment.
