Christmas is a season of traditions. Everything is a little special during this time of the year, from the foods we eat, to the songs we hear and sing, to the decorations that brighten up our homes. Part of the joy of Christmas comes from the enduring stories we listen to as children that remain part of the tapestry of our lives and get passed down from generation to generation. The Little Christmas Store & Other Stories, so beautifully written by Kevin P. White, M.D., is the perfect offering of words that have the power to endure.
The Little Christmas Store & Other Stories is a collection of twelve truly inspirational Christmas stories. In effect, it’s a patchwork of very different stories that has universal appeal. From funky titles like When Aliens Came for Christmas and Chicken Soup for Christmas to more traditional titles like A Christmas to Remember, there’s something for everyone. In The Little Christmas Store, Ryan reluctantly goes in search of three gifts and instead finds the true meaning of Christmas after visiting a nondescript little store full of old things that no one would ever want. In Finding Christmas, the whole town of Appleton puts their Christmas festivities on hold as they search for Christmas, the town’s beloved Yuletide cat, and in The Gift, brilliant brain surgeon Emily learns that a person’s title has nothing to do with their measure as a person.
Each of the characters in White’s stories is somehow flawed or vulnerable and the theme of Christmas brings out their vulnerabilities, ripping off the veneers in which each has clothed themselves. White shows us that while the Christmas season is a time of excess, it’s also a time of hope and repair, when things take on a new perspective or are seen through different eyes. Many of White’s stories can’t be read without a box of tissues at hand and all leave an indelible impression. For readers looking beyond the tinsel and glitz of Christmas for some deeper meaning to life in general, look no further than White’s offering. The Little Christmas Store & Other Stories is truly a wonderful collection that has the potential to endure from one magical Christmas season to the next.
