When we begin listening to the audio version of "The Lifeboat" by Charlotte Roganis we discover that Grace has survived the ordeal and is on trial for the murder of Hardie, along with two other women. Grace spins an exciting and heart-wrenching tale but how much of it is true? The setting is 1914 in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This tale is told from Grace Winter’s perspective. Grace and Henry are honeymooning on a luxury ocean liner, The Empress Alexandra, when a mysterious explosion sends the ship careening toward the deep dark depths. Henry sacrifices his own life to procure a seat in the lifeboat for Grace. The lifeboats are mislabeled and cannot hold the number of stated people. It soon becomes obvious that some lives must be sacrificed to preserve the lives of others. The survivors face the elements, their own fears and pain, and the fight to survive.
"The Lifeboat" is a character-driven fictional drama. It is the dynamics of the people in the lifeboat that makes this book impossible to put down. Grace seems to be a passive character as she shares her tale, but there are times when the reader suspects it may all be an act. There is also the character of Hardie to be considered. At first Grace considers him a hero but after a few days she sees him in a different light. The ending was surprising. This is the debut novel of Charlotte Rogan but I can say that she writes like a seasoned author. Rebecca Gibel is the narrator. I highly recommend this book.
