Nuzzels is a very inquisitive little skunk. He really wants to see the world outside of his den. He’s sure that it would make an exciting adventure. But his mother has forbidden anyone from leaving the den, telling them that the world outside is a dangerous place. Nuzzels tries to convince his siblings to join him on an adventure to the outside world, but they refuse, knowing that to do so would mean disobeying their mother. So Nuzzels picks a day when he knows their mother will be gone for a long time and sneaks out of the den. What he sees amazes him. There are all kinds of creatures, big and small, scary and friendly. He makes a few friends, but most of the creatures run when they see him. Nuzzels doesn’t understand why. When he meets a buzzard called Pie in the Sky, Nuzzels finds out why. You see, Nuzzels has BO – body odour big time! The only creatures that can stand his smell are those who can’t smell at all for one reason or another.
The adventures of this little skunk make for a delightful romp through nature, teaching young readers all kinds of interesting tidbits about different animals. Finis T. Jones’ story, The Life of Nuzzels: Nuzzels the Nosey Skunk, takes the reader on an interesting journey through nature. With beautiful illustrations to accompany the story, the plot develops from interactions between Nuzzels and one animal after another, until poor Nuzzels is well and truly lost. The underlying theme of this story, however, is the importance of listening to a parent’s instructions. Nuzzels didn’t listen to his mother and he was almost lost for good or even worse. Fascinating and educational. Who would have thought that a story about an inquisitive skunk would be so charming! Well done.
