The Legacy by Mark Snyder Jr. is a compelling horror novel about a select group of people delegated to save the world. There is a touch of the supernatural too, so there is a good blend of both genres. Climate change is one of the messages, as is the future of the planet, and it takes an intriguing, complex set of characters to bring this story to life. Snyder does a tremendous job of crafting unique characters who have a purpose and have interesting backstories. You'll learn about the ones called Balances, Imbalances, their specific traits and abilities, and are sure to connect with one or more on a personal level, like Ellen, Azra, Clayton, etc. My favorite is Johanna, the one who reflects humanity itself. Most horror plots center on good versus evil, so this one delivers in full. In this story, it seems that evil will always get the upper hand, but does it in the end? I think the author shows that goodness has its struggle and that something worth fighting for can be an uphill battle.
Snyder is talented at worldbuilding and character development. He knows his plot and his people inside and out and takes you on their journey. He writes with a message in mind and lets the characters fulfill it. Though some of the situations and characters are dark, I think this is the whole point. The author is giving us a cautionary tale that will make you think and feel along the way. I do enjoy the locations in the book and the overall message. Given my background in social work, I gravitate toward plots and characters steeped in challenges, but if trauma and tragedy are triggers for you, you should read with caution. I like the novel's contrast of light and dark and the mystery of how the characters are connected. If you enjoy immersive stories about gods, destinies, and dystopian themes, you will not want to miss The Legacy by Mark Snyder Jr.
