The Lean Leader’s Playbook: Guiding Teams to Excellence Through Empowerment and Effective Leadership by Pete Maher, LSSBB provides valuable tools that can be utilized in lean management to improve operational effectiveness. Excellent examples are given from the author’s experience with clear instructions on how to effectively utilize the various tools. As the reader goes through each tool, they may find that not all of them are valuable to use with their business, as there are many more effectively used with manufacturing. Nonetheless, there is plenty of gold in this book; one only has to pan for it and then put it into use in their businesses.

The initial sections deal with Operational Excellence and Lean Methodologies, introducing measures (ex: KPI, OEE, and 5S) as well as diagrams to represent results (ex: Value Stream Mapping, Spaghetti Diagrams, and SQDCP). As each is introduced, the rationale for each tool is explained, the specific procedure step-by-step laid out, and the resulting benefits are explained in detail. There is a section focusing on analyzing performance and waste (ex: Pareto Analysis, Work Break Down, and Load Chart), a section on Safety, approaches to successful leadership with a servant leader mindset, and performance challenges and solutions (including how to deal with poor performers). The Lean Leader’s Playbook by Pete Maher, LSSBB is truly a treasure chest of ideas and tools that can be utilized and adapted for companies of various sizes. As the reader goes through the book, highlighting which tools to use will help them determine which ideas to utilize first. An excellent, well-explained book on lean leadership and managing your team!
