Doug has been fired from yet another job. With the economy in bad shape, he had grown to expect this development and the feelings that flowed from it. Once again he will retire to his home, which needs repairs, and shrink into himself until he is ready to get back into the job market. Out of the blue, his former colleague Tyler, who also got the chop, comes around asking to stay with him until he sorts himself out. Doug agrees to this without a thought. Tyler's free-spirited and generous nature is just the catalyst that Doug needs and sets these young men on an emotional journey of discovery in The Lay-off House by David Rogers Jr.

An unusual storyline is centered around a house that represents different things to the different people who inhabit it. The Lay-off House delves deeply into the workings of the mindset of the unemployed and what they do to get by. David Rogers Jr. focuses on the interaction between the characters, effortlessly describing their different motivations as he fleshes them out. One unusual aspect of the book I consider impressive is the way he gives each of the characters their time in the spotlight through the use of a first-person narrative. The racial profiling incidents in the novel are an accurate depiction of the present situation in the country. This is an excellent piece of work that tells a story not given enough attention in this day and age.
