The Last Century: Return to Dimona by Jakub Filu unravels after the calamitous events brought about by the climate change crisis render part of our planet unfit for human life. The year is 2076 and pockets of human civilization have survived drought, famine, floods, the pandemic, the effects of a devastating nuclear war between India and Pakistan, failure of world economies, and the breakdown of the internet. One of the last remaining government systems is the League, which governs the remaining countries of the European Union. They send their elite Alpha teams to unlivable areas to collect old technologies and materials in an effort to end climate change. Lieutenant Thess Reevie, an orphan with a military upbringing, is a member of the elite team. On a mission to Dimona and the Shimon Peres Research Facility in Israel, she learns of the existence of a secret organization and will discover the enormous cost of the fight for the survival of the human race.

Jakub Filu’s The Last Century: Return to Dimona is a science fiction novel that is chillingly realistic. We are now experiencing global warming, a rise in sea levels, the loss of ice mass in Greenland, Antarctica, the Arctic and mountain glaciers worldwide, the Covid pandemic, and unpredictable and extreme weather events. Although some of the technologies mentioned here may not be within the realms of current human knowledge, it is not difficult to imagine that they can be developed by our scientists in the near future. This makes the dystopian world vividly described all too believable. Jakub Filu weaves together a plot with interesting twists and turns, and introduces a number of fascinating characters. The result is a well-researched dystopian novel that is easy to relate to. This book serves as a warning to those who ignore the reality of climate change. I highly recommend this informative book to all kinds of readers!

This book is terrifyingly accurate and sometimes I had to really persuade myself it is a fictional story.. However, maybe not fictional for long..
