The Kano, The Teacher, and The Lola by Christopher Holl is a quirky adventure novel that delves into the rich culture and heritage of the Filipino people. Michael, a young American, is enamored with a beautiful Filipina named Maria. However, he struggles to grasp the subtleties of her culture, taking a nonchalant attitude toward her friends and family. But he gets the shock of his life when a mysterious being calling himself the Teacher takes it upon himself to teach him the Ways of the Filipino and help his burgeoning relationship with Maria. The Teacher addresses Michael as Kano. Together, they embark on a journey through space and time where he imparts wisdom to Michael about the history of the Philippines, momentous events, the rich traditions, superstitions, and ways of the Filipino people.
An adventure story soaked in Filipino culture, heritage, and folklore, The Kano, The Teacher, and The Lola is a charming read from start to finish. There aren't many western books that delve deep into eastern culture, but author Christopher Holl's heartwarming adventure tale provides a thorough glimpse of the Philippines and its people, history, and culture as a whole. The book starts with a mysterious figure taking on the role of a mentor to prepare a young man in acclimating to the Ways of the Filipino because if you're dating a Filipino, it's a package deal. I thoroughly enjoyed the Teacher's dynamic with Kano, as their friendly banter made for plenty of entertaining scenes. This is a must-read for anyone wishing to learn the ways of a rich and vibrant culture.
