The Island of Macbeth by Mike Kostensky is about Mitch who had big dreams for his writing career. Things did not go as he planned, and now he is working as a journalist. He is not even well known in this profession, but he is doing all he can do to move forward. Once full of ambition, he is now no more than a man who likes his drinks hard and relationships that last no longer than a night. When he is given a new assignment on an island, he is not sure what he is to do with his dead end career.
But the island is very intriguing. It is called Macbeth and the community is very protective of its assets and people. The community is like a family and they have something too precious in their lives that they do not want to let go. But the island is cut off from the mainland and now the people of the island want to be freed from the bounds of a government that does not treat them well. With Mitch as their voice to the outside world, he and the people of Macbeth get ready for a bloody battle that no one wants but everyone needs.
I really love a novel where you get to feel the strong sense of family and community. This is exactly what we are lacking in our real lives. Mike Kostensky wrote a novel that has a political element, but he wrote it in a way that made it interesting and fun. The novel really stresses the fact that writers have a special power to make the world see things in a different way. I really liked that. A good political novel with enough spark and spunk to make it gripping. It totally deserves five stars.
