If you're a fan of dystopian thrillers set in the near future, grab yourself a copy of Peter E. Steppe's The InterConnect. In the year 2029, Hal Smith is hired by his friend, Henry, the CEO of Fourpoints Security, a software security company on the verge of going public. One of their clients is Echo-One Enterprises, which produces self-driving AI-operated cars that dominate the market. After a security breach at Echo-One Enterprises, all the cars unexpectedly stop working. Hal sets out to investigate, only to find himself embroiled in a far larger conspiracy. He discovers, however, that he might have more in common with the people he was supposed to be investigating than he previously thought. As events escalate further, the world will be changed forever.
Author Peter E. Steppe strongly reiterates the belief that progress for the sake of progress must be discouraged, and sometimes maybe a back-to-basics approach is necessary for a fresh start. The InterConnect showcases the potential dangers of unchecked technological advancements and the harmful effects of social media, where news quite often gets fabricated or manipulated by the rich and powerful to get their way. The author uses a multiple POV narrative, allowing the complex plot to move at a slower pace. Only a few characters truly stand out due to the large cast; however, the majority of them act as tools to drive the plot forward and provide the commentary that Peter E. Steppe is interested in. I would recommend The InterConnect to readers who enjoy reading dystopian thrillers and adventure novels.
