Lee Ann Rubsam’s The Intercessor’s Companion provides a well-organized, handy reference featuring numerous spiritually encouraging, relevant Scripture verses that address a wide range of prayer concerns/needs for ourselves and others. The book is simply structured and very easy to follow. The first half concentrates on reaffirming the importance of intercession, exposing some of the major natural reservations and impediments to prayer, and articulating the many reasons from Scripture why the person praying can have absolute confidence that God promises to hear and answer their intercessory prayers. Each chapter begins with a brief but inspirational essay from the author that helps the reader confront their doubts and hesitations about specific aspects of God’s power and intentions for the intercessory prayer. Then, an extensive set of short scriptural passages from both Old and New Testaments that directly pertain to that aspect is provided. The second half follows this same format but focuses exclusively on praying for the specific needs of others, such as their health and healing, salvation, and relationships.
I was especially impressed by the number of relevant Scripture passages that Lee Ann Rubsam was able to identify and apply to each intercessory prayer category. I found myself once again amazed at how God’s actual words and thoughts, as expressed in the Bible, provide the best possible basis for appealing to God and His promises to provide for all our needs. Another positive feature of The Intercessor’s Companion is the clear, focused, and unpretentious writing style used in the introductory essays to each chapter. My only “regret” about the essays was that I would have enjoyed reading even more of her reflections and examples of specific struggles and obstacles that she and others have faced and managed with God’s help to overcome in the various prayer categories. All in all, this is a conveniently structured, well-researched, high-utility reference source and inspirational support tool for employing Scripture directly to aid the intercessory praying process. Highly recommended, especially to anyone serious about making intercessory prayer an important part of their Christian walk.
