The Infernal Games (Baku Trilogy Book 1) by Reed Logan Westgate is a horror audiobook that would appeal most to a mixed audience of mature young adults, or adults who enjoy fantasy horror and do not mind some explicit language and graphic violence. Xlina’s life is far from normal as a descendant of an ancient creature that consumes nightmares and with a duty-obsessed druid for a father. Yet she is hopeful that her move to Portland, Maine will provide a second chance for a more normal life. That hope is soon dashed when she learns that her social worker is a demon and that her eternal soul is in jeopardy.
The Infernal Games by Reed Logan Westgate is a well-written and well-narrated audiobook that lived up to its intriguing cover image. I enjoyed the survival aspect of the plot and the suspense that was added with the risk to Xlina’s eternal soul. I liked the way the author also added elements of romance and attraction with Oxivius and Amber. It introduced a nice sort of spice to the story and gave me a better feel for Xlina’s feelings apart from fear. The narrator is Zach NeSmith, who is an experienced voice actor with numerous audiobook credits to his name including The Big Book of Bootleg Horror: Volume 4, The Wishing House: Book 1, and In the Gloaming: Arctic Horror. I found his performance clear in this audiobook, especially his experience with narrating horror books with his timed pauses and well-pitched voice. I greatly enjoyed The Infernal Games and the narration allowed me to form a vivid picture of the characters in my head.
