While an heiress, a teenage runaway, and a group of college freshmen girls are all starting a new stage in their lives, someone is poisoning and killing the students in the suspenseful mystery novel, The Hunger Month by Jessamine Koch. Sixteen-year-old Leila's life with her mother's new boyfriend is unbearable, so she takes drastic measures. She cuts her hair, changes her name to Beth, alters her habits, boards a bus, and leaves her old life behind. Highly intelligent, Beth can attend college, and no one will think to look for her there. Very strict, Grace's parents never let her mingle with others. When they died, Grace determined to go to college and live in a dorm, but she had to wait for five years. Grace grew out her hair, changed her name to Gwen, and enrolled in her grandmother's Alma Mater. Denny, Laurie, and Audrey all had loving families who expected them to enjoy college. As the school year begins, each of these characters faces trying circumstances that go beyond ordinary college life. Someone is drugging students, and Denny, Laurie, and Audrey find themselves caught in the middle of the murder case. Each of them is hiding secrets, but is one of them murdering their fellow classmates?
Set in the early 1970s, The Hunger Month by Jessamine Koch is a thrilling mystery that kept me on the edge of my seat until the final page. It is an intense story with a highly involved plot and complicated characters. Told from different perspectives, each girl is unique, and their contrasting histories and fascinating personalities bring the story to life. There's a lot packed into the plot, and the twists and turns had me guessing all the way through. With so many curveballs, I couldn't decide who the culprit was. The Hunger Month is a masterpiece of intrigue, and I can't recommend it highly enough. It is a sensational murder mystery that promises to entertain everyone who loves novels with intricate storylines filled with suspense and drama.
