I usually do not read sequels of books unless I have read the first book in the series, but the cover and description of The Horseless Horsemen: Rita (Volume 2) by R.C. Miller convinced me to read the book. The story begins with a killing, or rather, two killings. We then move on to follow the life of Lucy, who is the mother of Rita. We see how bad a childhood Rita had and how she ended up living in an orphanage to becoming a successful officer. It's more dramatic than it sounds.
The main story of the book, however, is what Rita experiences when something goes horribly wrong during a call-out. She has to learn that the line between the dead and the living isn't as clear cut as people might wish and that souls do indeed exist.
R.C. Miller's writing is fantastic when he goes into details. He writes in a very engaging way and you feel drawn into the story. He could have written a lot more, put more depth into the various events, and the book would still have been a great read. Yes, it should have been longer.
The Horseless Horsemen is a book I would recommend to people who like horror and fantasy, but do not want the horror to be too gory. It's a good, entertaining read that doesn't scare you too much, unless you have a very faint heart.
