There can be a powerful bond between a girl and her horse. And, when that bond is challenged, they can work together as a team. A beautiful black stallion is sold when the family’s finances are compromised and he is taken away from his beloved girl. But she has not given up. When she notices the new owners being mean and brutal, she comes to the rescue and manages to help the stallion escape into the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, with the girl on his back, of course. They ride so fast and so far, that the two are soon lost. With no food and no water, they both become weak, easy targets for a pack of coyotes. If the local veterinarian hadn’t heard the girl’s shrieks and come to the rescue, it may have been the end for both the horse and his girl.
Liana-Melissa Allen obviously has a passion for horses and she knows them well. In this middle grade story, The Horse and His Girl: A Story of Loyalty and Love, the powerful bond and love shared between a horse and his girl clearly shine through. Their adventures and their strong sense of responsibility for the other make them a powerful team, one that can survive the odds of thirst and starvation and wild predators. With charming pencil drawings to help carry the story along, this is a great story for young readers, especially those with a passion for horses. Wonderful descriptive passages pull the reader right into the story.
