The Horoscope Writer is a work of fiction in the crime, thriller, and suspense subgenres. It is best suited to mature adult readers owing to some explicit language and graphic content throughout, as well as strong references to rape, suicide, and murder. Penned by author Ash Bishop, this chilling novel takes us into the dark underbelly of journalism when a mysterious writer sends damning, dangerous horoscopes to ex-athlete and struggling writer Bobby Frindley. Bobby is threatened that he must publish the predictions for one of them to come true, versus all of them if he doesn’t. So begins an investigation to discover the mysterious author behind them, but this lands Bobby in more danger than he could ever have thought possible.
Author Ash Bishop knows how to deliver a sinister crime tale with plenty of nasty surprises lurking around every corner. I was really impressed by the flow and smoothness of the narrative, which makes you feel like you’re in safe hands and never lets you down with those ‘aha’ moments as the plot begins (or seems to) come together. Bobby is an easy character to follow and relate to whether you like him or not, which gives him a realistic anti-hero kind of feel at the novel’s start. As you get to know him and become more and more invested in the identity of the horrifying horoscope writer, the psychological elements of the work blur the lines between fiction and reality, which makes for even more startling conclusions as you race toward the end. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend The Horoscope Writer for fans of intense crime thrillers, horror tales, and psychological storytelling at its best.
