Readers of all ages can take delight in the work of author J. B. Michaels, whose characters explode into action from the earliest moments of this truly excellent novel. Keeping a supernatural adventure series going for six books is no mean feat, but the ideas incorporated into this story feel fresh and exciting, with new challenges for the cast of characters to encounter. I liked Maeve best of all for her capabilities and her wry yet charming personality, but all of the characters are well-drawn and described with the author’s smooth prose. The dialogue too provides great insight into personality and motivation, as well as punctuating the action scenes with some really dynamic and memorable dialogue moments. Overall, I would highly recommend Chronicles of the Order: The Horde for fans of the existing series and those who enjoy heart-pounding tales of adventure.

The monks, Bud and Maeve, are suddenly sent on a suspicious mission after Cardinal Riggio receives a call for help from another monk, near an offshoot of the Great Wall in the Mutian Valley, north of Beijing, China. According to the Cardinal, the monk was having a hard time sealing the bad spirits into a tree for the past few nights. Animals are mysteriously being slain in neighboring farms as well. However, before heading for China, Bud and Maeve stop by their vampire friend Ivy’s place to ask for her help. But Ivy is having problems of her own. After a brief conversation, they notice similarities to her problem with their own mission. Hoping to find the monster who tried to kill her father, Ivy is more than willing to help them. However, chaos strikes Castel SanÁngelo while the trio fights for their lives in China. Will they be able to find whoever is behind this monstrosity and stop them from unleashing evil on the world?

The Horde: Chronicles of the Order by JB Michaels is brilliant and filled with action. Its pace is fast but not frantic and the scenes are vivid and exciting. I love the relationship between Maeve and Bud, the lovebird monks. Their relationship isn’t the cringe-y, clichéd kind of romance. They complement each other and are strong even when they are apart. Their bond makes them more powerful and better people. JB Michaels has done a great job of pulling me emotionally deeper into the story with every chapter I read. An example is the relief I felt when Maeve woke up after being knocked down and hit with two arrows during their battle at the Great Wall. I felt heartbroken and worried when Ivy couldn’t be contacted after being pushed down by their enemies and they had to leave the place without her. Even when I finished the book, my thoughts still lingered on what could have happened to Ivy. Maeve may be optimistic about Ivy’s situation but I still worry; the story is unpredictable! Anything can happen! The one of a kind plot and the exceptional characters makes this book even more praise-worthy and thrilling to read.

Filled with action and dialogue, the story unfolds at a quick pace. The incredible backdrops of Castel Sant'Angelo, located in Rome, and an ancient Chinese monastery situated in rural China, create a striking atmosphere in setting the mood of the story. Being the sixth book in a series, it is a little difficult to keep up with the story. I recommend reading the previous books to fully relate to the plot and characters. However, with dynamic characters, fast-paced action, and exciting scenes, it is worth the effort. The saga continues as the story ends on an earth-shattering cliff hanger in preparation for the sequel. It is an exciting and bloody novel with thrilling fight scenes that will delight everyone who loves violent battles against monsters.

The Horde: Chronicles of the Order, Book 6 is a supernatural adventure novel written by J.B. Michaels. Cardinal Riggio’s belief that the Order of St. Michael’s headquarters in Castel Sant’Angelo was impregnable had given Quint, a shapeshifter, the perfect opportunity to infiltrate the order and to blame his compatriot, Bela, for the damage he was planning on causing. His kind was perfectly suited for assassination and he was going to enjoy destroying the Order. Quint failed, however, to surprise the Cardinal when he appeared in Riggio’s humble bedroom. Cardinal Riggio had been expecting him, as he informed the ancient shapeshifter. But Quint was determined to destroy the cardinal and to send his newest young monks, Bud and Maeve, on a doomed mission to China. When they met with him, they didn’t see the gill-faced ancient being before them, but rather it was Cardinal Riggio, his one hand oddly bandaged, who advised them that he had been contacted by a monk from China, who was unable to seal the tree under his care at night. They would be traveling to Beijing where the monastery was located to the city’s north. Maeve noted something odd about the Cardinal, and not just the bandaged arm, but she couldn’t pinpoint the difference she was feeling. As the Cardinal had requested, they considered this a matter of some urgency and were soon on their way.

J.B. Michaels’ The Horde is action-packed and a hoot to read. His three main characters, Bud, Maeve, and Ivy, just keep on getting more fully dimensional. Watching them work as a team is grand fun, and seeing them square up against a horde of zombie monks kept me enthralled and on the edge of my seat. The plot is ingenious, and the action fast-paced and unpredictable. The ancient monastic setting for this installment of the Chronicles of the Order is fabulous. So much for them -- and the reader -- to see and explore as they try to make sense of the situation and restore some sense of order. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series -- it just keeps on getting better. The Horde: Chronicles of the Order, Book 6 is most highly recommended.
