The Homecoming Racer by Logan Stoves is a beautifully written novel with a strong appeal to sports fans. Jackson is the winner of the Arizona 500 and he has succeeded in building a good fan base. He is an easy-going high school athlete who has learned to enjoy the simple pleasures of life and the company of his friends. He is upping his game, aiming for the championship racing trophy, and with not that much experience, he knows he needs the right mindset and a good support system to achieve it. But is one week enough to get him ready for the trophy? As if that isn’t enough to keep his brain working, he longs for Grace Moore. What will it take to win her?
Logan Stoves creates interesting characters and allows readers, especially sports fans, to relive the exhilaration of sporting competitions. The protagonist is a rookie racer, a young man who experiences success quickly and who is on the path to creating history. The feeling can be overwhelming and I wanted to see how the protagonist develops through the narrative. The story is told in beautiful prose and in an engaging voice. I enjoyed the sense of teamwork and how it comes out through the narrative. The author also explores themes of love, friendship, and sports, and allows readers glimpses of the mind of the young protagonist. The Homecoming Racer captures the racing experience with all the fever that accompanies it and allows the heart of a young hero to be laid bare before readers. I found it captivating.
