The Holocaust Conspiracy by Olena Vasylchenko is a thriller set in Russia and Ukraine with scenes in London and South Africa. Viktor Wolf stars as the undercover spy, tasked with apparently innocuous activities while trying to discover high-level corruption within the government. However, those suspects who are on the shortlist are murdered one by one without any apparent reason and with no clues as to who has ordered their deaths. What begins as a fact-finding mission to uncover the truth becomes more dangerous as the real danger is revealed. The love interest with the sculptor Oksana provides a second level of interest, but she has close ties with a Russian oligarch and his wife. Can they be trusted? Whose side are they on? The tension increases right up to the explosive ending. This story is a whirlwind race through well-researched locations in Europe, South Africa, and Britain.
In writing her World War III thriller, The Holocaust Conspiracy, Olena Vasylchenko has given us a tale right up there with John Le Carre and Len Deighton. At first, I was puzzled by the title and how it described the story, but it all became clear, and, as the action speeds up to a terrifying conclusion I could not turn the pages fast enough. There are so many red herrings; who could trust who? Viktor Wolf is a lovable and likable character. He is so well drawn that I was holding my breath as he ventured into dangerous places time and again. Was this just another fact-finding trip across yet another border, or was he being lured into a trap by his enemies? The settings are so realistic, especially Johannesburg and Cape Town which the author describes accurately. This book will do very well with lovers of spy thrillers whose stories never age, and this one is right up to date. A fantastic book well worth reading especially as Vasylchenko is familiar with the cultures of Russia and Ukraine. A modern spy thriller with tremendous appeal.
