The Grid Warrior is a futuristic sci-fi novel written by Kev Martin. Set in the year 2031, the book follows brothers Paul and Simon, professors at Portsmouth University, whose love for gaming led them to spend the last two decades perfecting a revolutionary simulatory framework. Ignoring his brother's wishes, Paul Wilson enters the game world of Future Games using his experimental network connected with a supercomputer. After he accidentally wipes out a player from the world, word gets out of a dangerous and intelligent hacker stealing people's accounts and erasing characters. It causes Future Games to put a $1 million bounty on his head and leads to players trying to hunt and kill him. Meanwhile, Simon is being held hostage by men sent by the Future Games corporation.
Gamers and lovers of LitRPG should rejoice for The Grid Warrior seems specifically tuned to the tastes of fans of the genre. Kev Martin's novel is a combination of LitRPG and sci-fi that primely showcases the impact of futuristic virtual reality platforms and the ramifications of its addictive nature. The plot moves at a fast pace, and the characters are used as tools to supplement it. I was impressed by the worldbuilding of the game world and felt that author Kev Martin expertly captured the behavior of real-life online gamers and used it seamlessly in his world. The last chapters are full of action sequences that build up to a climax, which felt as surprising as it was explosive. I would recommend The Grid Warrior to all gamers out there.
