The Greatest Latin Primer by Cato and Ruth Finnegan isn’t for everyone but, as a writer, I find myself fascinated with words and a lot of English words originate in either Latin or Greek. I found this primer very illuminating as regards to Latin. Ruth Finnegan’s study questions and commentary were very helpful since it has been quite a long time since I’ve even read Latin, let alone studied it. These verses and short essays will probably not resonate with most young people today, but I believe there are those in every generation who respect and are curious about the past. These people will like this primer. It might be argued that this primer preserves the best of the ancient Roman Empire. It preserves its ideas and ideals. The empire itself has been gone a long time, but in a way books like this and the ideas inside it keep Rome eternal.
This primer has influenced such varied and great men as Benjamin Franklin and the English King Alfred the Great. If you really think about it hard, and once you realize that this primer has been a basic educational tool for generations of schoolboys, starting with Roman schoolboys, it could be argued that only the Bible has had more influence on mankind as far as books go. It actually gives the Bible a very good run for its money because the primer has always been considered a moral guide as well as a grammatical reference book. It is organized and well written, both the English and the Latin. I think Ruth Finnegan has rendered a great service to scholars everywhere.
