The Golden Rule is a children’s book of acceptance, written by Jessica Marie Baumgartner and illustrated by Laura Winship-Fanaei. A young child, Pagan by faith, has many friends. Her friends come from different countries, races, religions and backgrounds. One thing that binds them is known as “The Golden Rule,” which talks of being kind to others and treating them as you would wish to be treated. In Paganism, two words make up the Golden Rule – which simply consists of: Harm none. Whether from Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu or most other religions, we are taught to be kind and to accept others. Philosophy is also a way of living in which questions are asked within one’s self, such as in Confucianism and Taoism. The world needs more love, diversity and acceptance, and being kind to one another is the first step.
Jessica Marie Baumgartner’s tale of love, friendship and unconditional acceptance is a welcome breath of fresh air. As a Pagan myself, I could not help but smile at the beautiful message this book holds about being non-judgmental towards others simply because of their race, religion or background. The world is filled with so much harm and hurting right now, and The Golden Rule gives me hope that there may, indeed, be a better tomorrow in store for us. Not only are the author's words easy to understand, regardless of a person’s beliefs, but the message is clear and comforting: Hurt nobody, and treat others as you would wish them to treat you. Creatively worded, beautifully illustrated, and conveying a message of love and acceptance, The Golden Rule has captured my heart in so many ways and I believe the world would benefit from its words. I recommend The Golden Rule to be read by all children and adults, readers young and old, to teach (or remind) us of what it is to be a good person, making this world a much better place in which to live.
