The Ghosts on the Wall: A Grandson's Memoir of the Holocaust describes what happened to Kenneth D. Wald's family members: his parents and grandparents. Kenneth grew up in a modest home with a portrait of his paternal grandparents on a wall. He never knew his German-Jewish grandparents. Kenneth never felt any connection to them until he found almost 200 letters and notes written in German that his grandparents sent to his father from Germany in the late 1930s and early 1940s. As his father never shared anything about his family, Kenneth only knew that his grandparents died in the war. However, a series of events leads Kenneth to learn more about their fate during the Nazi occupation. This book introduces the reader to all the events that brought Kenneth closer to his ancestors and finally made him feel that they were truly his grandparents. It reveals his father's journey to the United States and his grandparents' efforts to move with their son to the United States.
Kenneth D. Wald's memoir, The Ghosts on the Wall, is a must-read I highly recommend. It provides an engrossing account of loss and survival, capturing a family's Holocaust history. The author tells this touching and important true story with great honesty and raw emotion. It honors the memory of the author's grandparents and shows how the Holocaust affected three generations of their family. As the son of Holocaust survivors and grandson of Holocaust victims, Kenneth D. Wald has crafted a deeply moving reminder of a dark past that still haunts and remains painfully relevant. Anyone interested in gaining more insight into the harrowing experiences of Holocaust victims should read this book.
