Jasmine C. Caldwell’s The Geek Girl Squad: Rosie features a budding romance between Rosie and Matt. Rosie is a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit with an affinity for science fiction. Matt and Olivia agree that Matt can sublet her apartment while he interns at The Orange Blossom Restaurant. Matt is surprised to find the entire squad, Jake, and Caleb are present to help him move into the apartment. Rosie helps by carrying up a laundry basket, but, ashamed that she might see his dirty underwear, Matt snatches the basket away from her. Every encounter with Matt gives Rosie the impression that he doesn’t like her. When one of her NICU patients dies, Rosie is so distraught she forgets Olivia has moved and knocks on Matt’s door. Matt invites her into his apartment and consoles her. Both of them find a connection forming, but will it upset the squad since Matt is Olivia’s younger brother?

Jasmine C. Caldwell built tension in the story with Matt’s moodiness. From Rosie’s perspective, his actions make her feel unwanted. Her inexperience with men is understandable since she has an extremely busy schedule as a nurse and doesn’t regard herself as attractive. Although Matt likes Rosie, he becomes so agitated that he tends to sound rude. I thought Mia playing Cupid was funny, and her constant hopelessly romantic comments were lighthearted. Olivia seemed condescending, and I often questioned why her boyfriend sided with her. I cried when Rosie’s patient died. The alternating viewpoints between Rosie and Matt gave a deeper look into their insecurities, especially about their body images. This slow-burn romance provides several events I could relate to, and it was easy to identify with the same emotions Rosie and Matt felt. The Geek Girl Squad: Rosie is perfect for readers who like reading realistic romances.
