"The Further Adventures of Blackjack" is Ellen Feld's latest in the 'Morgan Horse series'. In this book, Heather has dreams of showing her Morgan named Blackjack in the Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show in Oklahoma. After winning a regional title, Heather's dreams become a bit more realistic. But, she must somehow raise the money necessary to make the lengthy journey to Oklahoma. When an offer comes to buy one of Heather's three horses, Heather ponders whether to keep the horse she loves or whether to sell the horse and fund her way to the national championships. On the way to the tournament, several events occur which tend to mature Heather in her overall outlook in training horses. She works hard to be seen as a responsible caretaker and she wins the admiration of trainers and colleagues. But then, an event occurs which threatens the showing of her beloved Blackjack. Heather must decide whether to go with her motivation to enter the big show or whether to consider the best interests of her horse.
This is a lovely series in which mid-grade readers are taught a sense of responsibility and appropriate risk-taking. The characters are loveable and their struggles to do the right thing are truly charming. Girls in particular will like the series, but boys can find some benefit in the read as well. It is obvious from the descriptive nature of the horse care routine that the author possesses deep knowledge of what she writes about.
