Have you ever wondered what happens to and in your house when you and your family go away on vacation? Katy and her family are off to visit Grandma for the Christmas holidays. The day before they leave, it’s snowing heavily and Katy notices a frog shivering against the window. That’s her only contact with this mysterious frog, but when the family returns two weeks later, something’s just not right and they’ve apparently won an award for the best window display of the season. While her parents aren’t sure, Katy has figured it out. She had lost her mitten while leaving the house and it must have held the door open, allowing all kinds of creatures to seek warmth over the cold winter holiday. The frog from the window thought he was the only one to find a warm oasis, only to discover there were many others seeking warmth and comfort.
What a great way to teach young readers (and their parents) about caring and generosity, all in the spirit of the season. Scott Langteau’s picture book story, The Frog at the Window: A Completely Wild Christmas Tale, is a Christmas treasure for the entire family. With beautiful illustrations, this enchanting, creative plot wraps the young reader in its enticing web of storytelling right from the beginning. The story develops mostly through the ‘wild’ animal characters, as they set up residence in Katy’s home. With the frog as their guide, and an orderly frog he is, control is maintained and all messes are tidied up before Katy’s family returns. The powerful message behind this charming story is about kindness and generosity, not just to the animals all around us, but also to the people who struggle every day for survival, many living on the streets in all kinds of bad weather. Be kind to your fellow persons and animals, not just at Christmas, but all year long. Beautifully told.
