The Final Weekend: A Stoned Tale is a work of comedic fiction penned by author Neal Cassidy. Written for adults due to mature sexual situations, drug use, violence, and explicit language, the plot focuses on six college friends who are about to leave the world of education behind and head into their real adult lives. As a final farewell to the hedonism they have enjoyed during their time together, the crew plans an epic night out, but an interaction with the Peter Pan-ish Professor Goodkat invites chaos, the outpouring of secrets, and the full reality of the future that lies ahead. What results is a raunchy and amusing look at fantasy versus reality and a poignant awakening to truly growing up.
Everybody thinks that they’re a grown-up when they’re at college, and it’s on this beautiful confident naivety that author Neal Cassidy hinges a lot of the pathos and comedy of this fun little drama. Four lads and two girls, who have shared their lives over their years in college, share a wild ride that keeps up an interesting pace as their exploits get increasingly out of control. The writing and dialogue are sharp and funny for this college romp section of the humor, but I found the real charm of the novel was in those moments of stark realization about life, and how the characters’ perspectives began to change as the plot moved forward. Overall, I would recommend The Final Weekend: A Stoned Tale for readers seeking a balance between outrageous humor and clever pathos.
