Loron-Jon Stokes’ The Fifth Descendant takes the term “family feud” to an entirely new height and playing field beyond belief—-suspended animation. Pleo’s life changes when he learns he’s the last and only direct descendant assigned with the task of assassinating Jeremiah Aldrich, a powerful and wealthy man who murdered his great-ancestors. Jeremiah managed to escape Pleo’s family’s revenge as well as capture by authorities by going into suspended animation for 507 years. Before doing so, he also ordered the killing of Pleo’s then-current bloodline, as well as the future bloodline that would be birthed during his slumber. The story unravels and begins to take pace as Pleo, who’s only a teenager, learns more of the feud and discovers that he also comes from a long bloodline of trained and skilled assassins!
Written in U.K. style English, The Fifth Descendant, is a book better suited for a reader that enjoys watching a story develop, as the beginning is taken at a casual pace to build and prep for the plot. True and bonafide sci-fi fans will enjoy it, as Loron-Jon Stokes displays a great knowledge and understanding of sci-fi terminology through detailed character dialogue and narratives. I particularly enjoyed the back story; I found it to be very intriguing, detailed, thoroughly thought out, and superbly written. This book is a great example of what a science-fiction work should be; virtual reality, avatars, exotic planets and worlds, strange and interesting alien species and lifeforms, and a great storyline—-it’s all there. Nice job!
