Lila the cat is always in a good mood. One day, Lila approaches her food tray and finds inside it a sparkly, mysterious yarn colored pink and green. What could this yarn be? Following its thread, Lila begins an exciting and mysterious journey that leads her to a letter and a lilac door. Stepping inside the door, a purple and magical world reveals itself, full of peculiar animals, each one more colorful than the other and each having a special gift. After witnessing all the magical animals and their powers, Lila needs to find her own gift, and by understanding what magic is, the sparkly yarn appears, and she disappears back home. Was it all in her imagination?

One of the aspects that I liked about The Fantastical Forest by Sherry Dahl and Rachelle Gage is the beautiful illustrations created by Rachelle Gage. The illustrations are done in a style similar to watercolor paintings, and through them, the story of Lila comes to life. All the characters in the book are portrayed through bright colors and cute designs like Frankie Frog, which made me analyze the book more closely. I also liked how the style of writing was simple and included rhythm within the author’s choice of words, like "spells" and "smells" or "levitation" and "dedication." Although the story can be considered short, to me the pace was leisurely.
