Murder, financial fraud, money laundering, and political corruption are some of the themes that give depth to The Fake: Deadly Finances by Karlheinz Moll, a thriller with a well-crafted international setting that takes readers across continents, from Europe to Asia to the United States. Two people with links to a global banking group are murdered: an employee in Munich and another who worked in the Luxemburg branch of the same bank. Another murder is committed in Singapore, and this time, it is someone trying to reach out to Interpol Agent Cynthia Yeow following the discovery of unusual activity on company accounts. The murders, coupled with the dubious movement of huge sums of money through company accounts in the same bank will bring Alexander Granger of the German Federal Police and Cynthia together. As they investigate the shady financial dealings of the bank, they must determine the link it has with the run for senator in Montana after the resignation of Senator James Bullock and an enigmatic businessman in Azerbaijan.
This is a powerful story with compelling characters, and Karlheinz Moll has a unique way of introducing the characters, keeping readers in suspense as they want to find out what the characters are up to. The plot is intricately written, featuring strong points and intrigue that move it steadily forward. The writing is stellar, filled with descriptions that are terrific and vivid; the setting is well-written with locales and views that fill the imagination of the reader. The strength of this narrative is in the clever plotting and the author’s unique gift for compelling and unforgettable characters. The story leaves readers in no doubt about the author’s background in business consultancy and finance. The tension mounts as the lead characters investigate the unusual movement of money, culminating in a US election in which an unknown candidate takes center stage. Karlheinz Moll keeps readers guessing and wondering about the direction the story takes as they follow the sleuth work from page to page. The Fake: Deadly Finances is a perfect thriller that can’t be put down, thanks to the great writing, strong conflict, and sophisticated characters.
