In The Dog in the Woods by M. H. Altis, 11-year-old Billy is bored. His mother is tending to his baby sister, and his father is working, so Billy wanders off to play by himself. He's been told never to go into the forest, but today, he decides he will. As he wanders deeper in, he meets a new friend – a dog. They play all day, but when it's time to go home, the dog won't come past the edge of the forest. Why not? When Billy starts to ask questions, he gets answers he doesn't expect, answers that change his life forever. Who does the dog belong to? Why is it wandering the forest alone? And what does Billy discover in the forest?
The Dog in the Woods by M. H. Altis is a spine-tingling tale, but it has some humor to lighten the load. It's a short story that will hold your attention throughout, a compelling tale with a little of everything – humor, action, adventure, suspense, and a little sadness thrown in for good measure. The characters are well-developed, and you get to know the main protagonist, Billy, very well. This is a steady story with a great plot and is written in a way that allows you to picture what's happening, almost as if you were there with Billy on his adventures. If you like short, concise stories with an ending that will make you think, you'll love this story. Highly recommended for fans of short stories and anyone who wants something a bit different to read.
