In The Deep Beneath: Book 1 of the H.A.L.F. Series by Natalie Wright, we meet the character who gives the book its name: H.A.L.F. 9. He's not human; he's a weapon created by humans for mass destruction. But, proven to be too much for his own creators to contain, he's been held underground in secret, sedated for as long as he can remember. But something has changed; he's free now. Free from the humans. Free from the underground. Free from the drugs that inhibited him. Erika Holt will be free too in a different sense. She'll be free from the trailer, free from her drunk mother, free from the pain her dead father causes her. Could she and H.A.L.F. 9 possibly work together or is his power more than both of them can handle?
Yes, this fits right along all the other teen science fiction books out there. But there's a reason the books follow a similar pattern: it works. It creates some of the best reading teens and adults alike can hope for in a sometimes dragged on and beaten down genre. The characters here are classically easy to fall in love with, the story line is unique enough to keep me interested in the entire series and keep coming back for more, and the writing itself is easy going enough to be perfect for young teens, but deep enough for adults. Natalie Wright has hit all the important points in making a successful Young Adult novel and I highly enjoyed reading it. Sign me up for book two of the H.A.L.F. series please!
