The DeathReaper is the first installment in Freya Daree's young adult fantasy series. Raised by an emotionally distant father and a hateful mother, teenager Amelie Weathers always found herself feeling isolated and alone. Her isolation from normal society stems from her dangerous and powerful indivium, The DeathReaper. But her daily life undergoes a drastic change after an experience in the woods when a man named Kane binds his dead soul with hers and leaves her stuck with his spirit. Furthermore, her parents' jobs move the family closer to Cyntro City, where the mysterious headmaster of her new school starts training her to activate her indivium. But her mother's greed for power and fame soon leads people from Indivix -- a company hunting DeathReapers -- onto her trail.
Do you enjoy reading books such as Divergent or watching movies like Jumper? If the answer is yes, you might find The DeathReaper similarly entertaining. Author Freya Daree's first book of The DeathReaper series blends fantasy, superhero, and sci-fi genres to create something that feels unique and original. The plot moves quickly, with enough twists and turns to make you turn the pages in eager anticipation of what is to come. The characters are distinct, and Amelie and Kane are well fleshed out. The narrative is mostly plot-driven, where the characters serve as pawns to drive the action forward. However, I was absorbed by Amelie's story and am looking forward to reading the sequels. I will recommend The DeathReaper to readers who enjoy young adult novels.
