The Cursebound Thief by Megan O’Russell is the first book in the Fracture Pact series. Jerek is determined to mend magic and fix what occurred twelve years ago. The Fracture was a significant event in history that broke magic and created chaos among the magical factions. The knights that set out on a quest to find answers wound up dead. It was believed that everyone gave up. That is until now. Jerek believes he has found a solution but it will require assembling a small team to pull off a heist to retrieve an artifact. He begins by staging a fake assassination to get his best friend (also a knight) to serve as a bodyguard. His next stop is to gather an assortment of talents including a vampire, werewolf, and magician.
The story starts with a humorous introduction to Jerek and a lighthearted tone that goes well with the heist scenario. Jerek is a zany character with a unique way of thinking outside the box such as staging an assassination attempt to ensure his best friend’s involvement. The dynamic between Jerek and Lincoln is a great example of the fun back-and-forth that Megan O’Russell has developed between the various characters. The story alternates between the characters of Jerek, Lincoln, Jack, Ari, Grace, and Eve who form this heist team. Each character and their different skills play a vital role in the way that events unfold. The plot weaves between these various perspectives and allows you to get to know each of them individually with little moments that give insight into their personalities. While these characters have extraordinary abilities, they’re all grounded in reality as demonstrated by the way that they deal with daily life.
The attitudes of the characters blend well as a team, but they also form a support system that is rooted in genuine friendship. Common supernatural elements are featured such as werewolves and vampires but in a way that is upbeat and fun, making you want to see what these characters are going to do next. The plot revolves around the Fracture and the aftermath that they’ve all been living in so fixing this problem is personal. The Cursebound Thief is highly recommended for those that enjoy fun stories with action, humor, great character dynamics, and fast-moving plots.
