The Curse of the Boran by Robert A. G. Erickson is a fantasy time travel adventure following Lenny, Jenna, Zada, and Effita, who with the assistance of a dryad Bella and an acorn, embark on a journey to recover Zada's lost memories. Their quest is riddled with symbols, monstrous creatures, native encounters, and dangerous landscapes, leading them to an ancient temple, which serves as the core of their trials. Breeden and Cassy encounter their own hurdles, uncovering their magic and facing potential sacrifices. As the story progresses the group endures storms, confronts dragons, and discovers Effita's prophetic role symbolized by a temple tattoo on her back. As the story reaches its climax, including a dilapidated temple, hidden treasures, and griffins, the team must see beyond shifting realities, magical transformations, and cryptic revelations to unlock the 'Curse of the Boran'.
In the interest of full disclosure, The Curse of the Boran by Robert A. G. Erickson is the first book I have read in the Tales of the Wizor Fair series. In most cases, it would be almost impossible to jump into the tenth book in a series and know what the heck is going on, but Erickson's portrayals and the fact that the quest of his established crew is singular to this episode made the novel easy to navigate as a first-time reader. I loved the camaraderie and the way the members of the group come into their own organically with their powers. Effita stood out to me because of her direct connection to the plot and when she is overwhelmed by emotion, I definitely felt it too. From a technical standpoint and with regard to the book's literary merit, the pacing is fast and the characters are exceptionally well-developed. When this is combined with accessible prose, satisfyingly tense situations, and a dragon, I can happily say that the book is worth reading. Very highly recommended.
