The Cousins Crime by Manasi Patil is a charming novella with all the right ingredients needed for an afternoon of whodunit mystery, filled with suspense, several suspects, and a satisfying ending. When Krisha and her brother Aarav bicycle to their favorite doughnut shop, Glazer’s Bakery, on a beautiful summer’s day, they are looking forward to their favorite treat. But when a burglary takes place while they are enjoying their doughnuts, and Krisha hears about other suspicious incidents, she decides to go undercover and discover who is determined to sabotage the business at Glazer’s Bakery. Krisha has all the right questions for her suspect interviews and, with her expert sleuthing skills, soon discovers who the culprit is.
Manasi Patil is a 14-year-old author who did a superb job of leading me through the puzzle of her mystery novella The Cousins Crime. It is complete with a number of suspects and reasons for each to be trying to ruin the reputation of the town’s favorite bakery, Glazer’s Bakery. Manasi Patil’s skill in ending each chapter on a cliffhanger kept me turning the pages. Manasi Patil’s enthusiasm and her love of storytelling shine through and I have confidence her writing skills will continue to improve. Her illustrations throughout the book are super cute and the reward for solving the mystery would be a thrill to receive! All young readers, especially those who have a shared love of reading and writing with Manasi Patil, will be captivated by The Cousins Crime and will be clamoring for more.
