The Christmas King by Tonya T. Strickland is a familiar Christmas tale crafted into a picture book, a storybook, and a biblical teaching tool. The book follows the birth and life of Jesus Christ through a unique format that is perfect for all ages. Various important figures that Jesus encountered throughout his life are included such as Nicodemus and Zacchaeus. Key moments are cleverly incorporated such as calming the storm, healing the blind, and healing a leper. The book serves as an ideal resource and conversation starter ideal for children of all ages. Strickland blends rhymes, chapters, and illustrations to bring these stories to life. The book also includes a seek-and-find activity and a free Game Pack which makes for a fun interactive experience.
The format is unique though Tonya T. Strickland balances these well so that the book works overall for children of various ages. The rhyme scheme will keep the attention of younger children with short verses. The lovely verses rely on illustrations to help bring the story to life and show the different important interactions and moments throughout Jesus’ life. Each interaction referenced is an important part of Jesus’ life and the illustrations show His compassion and power. The format changes with chapters that go into the deeper meaning behind each story while also upping the age level. The storybook chapters feature the same stories as the picture book and by delving deeper into these chapters you get a sense of why they’re important. The simplicity of the writing makes it easy to understand the meaning behind these stories. These chapters have fewer illustrations which do not take up a full page and only place single people or animals scattered throughout to highlight the most important aspects. The Christmas King, though focusing on the Christmas story, is good for any time of year with a balance that can easily reach all ages and is a fun interactive story for the whole family to enjoy.
