"It turns out that in the real world and in her world, nothing is as it seems, no one is as they seem, not even her." Sixteen-year-old book lover Éabhla feels trapped in her home as her adopted mother, Maloire, and older brother, Sté, rarely let her go outside. One day, she gets her wish as Maloire reluctantly gives her permission. It's summer, and walking around the neighborhood is fun and refreshing. She even pays a visit to a fish and chip shop. As she's about to return home, a strange and dangerous person appears. Luckily, help comes at the right time but her life has changed since then as Maloire and Sté reveal her true identity and the history of their people. The Chief’s Revenge is a unique YA fantasy by Gift Ruremesha.
The history and system of the otherworldly abilities of the druids and their home, Xemera, add a fascinating layer to the story's world-building. The system of the druids' supernatural abilities is interestingly complex; sencerya (senses), momegno (speed, strength, and agility), shanger (shapeshifters) and encantea (enchantments). I appreciated that a Name Pronunciation Guide is provided for readers as the characters have quite unique names. Protagonist Éabhla is easy to empathize with as she has to learn more about herself and faces a different kind of threat. I found another protagonist, Serenomia, a force to be reckoned with at times as she adds an interesting dynamic between the other characters. All in all, The Chief’s Revenge by Gift Ruremesha has a good blend of modern fantastical elements balanced with drama, love, as well as suspense and adrenaline-pumping moments that will satisfy its target readers.
