"The Chamomile" by Susan Craft is a lovely book of historical fiction which takes the reader to the early colonial days of the fight for independence from England.
The British have occupied Charlestown, South Carolina, and Lilyan has joined Patriot Spies in an attempt to rescue her brother from the horrors of a prison ship. Her lifelong Cherokee friend Elizabeth secretly helps her but then becomes an unwilling target for the British when she is the victim of a brutal attack. Lilyan has saved the life of one British officer and is forced to take the life of another. Lylyan and Elizabeth go into hiding with the help of the long-time family friend Callum. Although Lilyan has fallen in love with a military man from Greece, the two are soon separated by the demands of war and Lilyan is forced to flee with Elizabeth, Callum and Lilyan's ailing brother Andrew. They have several harrowing experiences resulting in losses and separations.
The author does an outstanding job of researching the relevant portion of American history and most readers will be captivated by her ability to interweave this research into a compelling story. At times, I found myself wishing that the characters had been developed to a greater depth at the expense of some of the historical trivia. If it had truly got into the minds and emotions of the historical characters that would have provided a more intense and rich experience of history for the reader.
