Patrice Lyle believes in writing what you love. Since the age of ten, she's been doing just that. Her father's policeman tales sparked her love of mysteries. Stories of her great grandmother's ESP sparked her love of the paranormal. And a trip to a drug store in England, where she bought a homeopathic remedy for a sore throat, sparked her love of natural health. I must confess that ever since I first read Anna Elizabeth Bennett's Little Witch, I have been drawn to children's stories about witches. As soon as I saw the title of Patrice Lyle's book, I had to grab it and start reading right away. I wasn't disappointed. The Case of the Invisible Witch: Poison Ivy Charm School Book One is an engaging and entertaining story about thirteen-year-old Tulip Bonnaire, Witch PI. I love that Tulip is a "Witch PI." That made me giggle right from the start. Lyle uses phrases that kids will not only relate to, but will make them laugh. Weird-o-rama was one of my favorites, and I catch myself saying it! My kids look at me like... huh? Tulip, like the other students, was required to wear a Poison Ivy locket which Lyle cleverly describes as looking like a silvery thin mint cookie with a huge blue eye in the middle. Prose such as this isn't the exception, it's the rule.
Lyle uses the word doofus, and I haven't heard that since my own school days. Lyle has a way with words, and she uses words like doofus, but not in an insulting manner toward any of the other characters. The plot is well done and adorable. The characters are well developed and one doesn't need to read far to know their personalities. I found that appealing. I cannot describe Lyle's writing and do it justice. She can weave words in a way only few can master; she definitely speaks to the level of her targeted age. Her prose is catchy, creative, and clever. I would give the author a dozen stars if I could. This is one of those books that you want to read over and over. I recommend this to anyone looking for a fun and entertaining read. Thank you for writing this book, Ms. Lyle.
