The Carcass Undressed is the debut poetry collection of Linda Eguiluz. Divided into three parts, the book contains some mesmerizing free verse poems inspired by Eguiluz's own life. "Black Spring" is a poem about despair -- how it affects a person and permeates through their preferred art form. In "Cracked," the narrator ponders on what specific event of their past left them broken, only to end up thriving in the ensuing chaos. "A Good Wife" is a striking critique of the notion that a woman should support her husband no matter what and play a secondary role in the relationship. Through "Mother," the narrator remembers the sacrifices made by their mother and the pain she had to undergo to keep things stable. In "Hijos de la Tierra," the narrator delves into their heritage and contemplates its significance in the bigger picture.
The Carcass Undressed is a stellar debut poetry collection that will leave poetry lovers with much to think about. Aptly titled, Linda Eguiluz holds nothing back and bares her soul through some beautifully penned verses that keep swirling in your mind long after you've read them. There is a sense of intimacy to the poems that make them all the more personal. Some of them are about clear-cut topics, and you can discern the underlying themes almost immediately. Yet, there are others that feel more abstract and open to interpretation. But every single one of them is unique and brings something of their own to the narrative. I thoroughly enjoyed The Carcass Undressed and highly recommend it to poetry lovers.
